They've pretty much over-dominated the CPU market at the moment. No point in them getting involved in GPUs as nVidia have that pretty much on lockdown. PSUs would be silly. Pretty much just leaves storage. I'd like to see Intel RAID not be a total pile of garbage.

On the topic of hobbled by sata - the microserver i've bought (coming ANY MOMENT TODAY!) has 4 SATA ports on its backplane (no SAS?) and only 2 are SATA6, and 2 are SATA3. What the fuck HP. THIS IS A GEN8 SERVER!!! So might have to stick a Dell Perc in to it.

Got 4x 1TB drives in it at the moment and 8GB ECC memory that I got free from the cupboard in work. Now to get it home and install Server2012 on this bitttchhhhhhh!

Does look tidy, How noisy is it considering the heat those drives are going to be kicking off ?

It's DEADLY quiet. It's a bit loud at first but even then it's just a loudish whirr, after that, i thought it'd turned off.

You can change the cooling profile From Optimal Cooling -> Performance Cooling -> Ultra Cooling but i'll check all those out later at home.

It's very neat, and actually quite substantial compared to the previous models. Downside is the crappy raid controller is only raid 0 or Raid 10. Not sure what i'll go for as 2TB overall in Raid10 isn't exactly huge. Might run it JBOD, or RAID0 if i feel like setting myself up for an adventure somewhere down the line.

glad to hear its a quiet one though, I know its unorthodox and potentially unwanted, but you could use windows raiding ? Depends if you can afford the hardware for a proper solution.

To be honest windows raid probably wouldn't be terrible. There isnt going to be much of importance on it, mostly media. And it's going to free up my synology so that'll be used for 'remote' backup so it might actually work.

That's alright, I can probably dig out a PERC6 from somewhere in here, or if i'm prepared to sacrifce it, i can take the one out of my work desktop. I get an awful lot of stuff from here that we dont use come to think of it..
